For the first time in the U.K. a degree in Montessori Education has been available since September 2008. The Foundation Degree in Early Years (Montessori), awarded by the University of Greenwich, is taught at the Kent & Sussex Montessori Centre in Chiddingstone. KSMC staff have been appointed as visiting lecturers at the University of Greenwich in order to deliver the course.
In 2009-10 Classes will take place on Tuesdays (10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.) commencing 22nd September 2009 for 30 weeks in term-time only.
Fees will be £1,740 for full-time students (from E.U. countries) or pro-rata for part-time students, including those in full-time employment. It may be possible to apply for this to be funded through the Graduate Leadership Fund.
This is a one-year course for those who already have a Montessori Diploma. Students who trained with KSMC will have automatic entry if their diploma was awarded at merit level. All other Montessori-trained applicants must attend an Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) interview, for which a small fee may be payable, to assess if any work needs to be made up. The course provides entry to the final year of an BA Honours Montessori degree with EYPS. Successful students will be qualified to apply to train for Qualified Teacher Status (although the degree does not itself guarantee acceptance on a PGCE course.)
For students who have not already obtained a Montessori Diploma, a full two year course is available from September 2009. Alternatively the Montessori Early Childhood Teaching Diploma may be taken at KSMC from September 2009 to provide entry to the Foundation Degree with advanced standing in the following or a subsequent year.
Assessment is via written coursework, an action research study and a professional portfolio. There are no formal examinations. All candidates must be working in (or volunteering in) an Early Years setting (i.e. in the age range 0 – 5 years). For students who are not already employed, placements will be arranged by KSMC.
Also, in future years, more flexible modes of delivery will be made available for those who cannot attend the Chiddingstone Centre every week.
